The Town of Newtown, Connecticut, has established a Fair Rent Commission to investigate complaints related to excessive rental charges. This ordinance was adopted by the Legislative Council on May 17, 2023.The commission is empowered to conduct hearings, make studies, and issue decisions based on factors such as market rents, sanitary conditions, and property maintenance. It also considers tenant income, utility availability, and whether rental increases are being reinvested in property improvements. The commission can enforce fines and manage escrow funds as per state regulations.
