Library Information for 1Ls

Welcome to the University of Connecticut School of Law Library!  Our primary mission is to provide information services that support the advancement of legal scholarship, education and research by serving the law school’s research and instructional needs.

This handout is intended to give you some of the most important library information that you’ll need as a new student.  Staff members at the Circulation and Reference Desks on the main level of the library are happy to answer any questions you may have.  Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance at anytime.

Library and Reference Hours

The library’s regular hours are: Monday-Thursday 8 am-11 pm, Friday 8 am-9 pm, Saturday 9 am-5pm, and Sunday 1 pm-9 pm.  Hours may vary during holidays.  More information about the library hours can be found on the library’s website or call (860) 570-5200.

Reference assistance is available throughout the academic year.  Reference librarians will be at the desk during the following hours when classes are in session: Monday-Thursday 10 am-12pm and 1pm-7pm, Friday 10 am-12 pm and 1 pm-5 pm, and by appointment by emailing refdesk@law.uconn.edu.

You can also contact a reference librarian at (860) 570-5068 or online, by using the ‘Chat with a Librarian’ feature on the library homepage.

ID Card for Photocopying and Borrowing Privileges

You will have your picture taken for your ID card during orientation. You will be able to pick up your ID at the Circulation Desk shortly thereafter.  You will need to present your ID to borrow books.

Once filled with ‘HuskyBucks,’ your ID also enables you to use the library’s photocopiers at a reduced rate of 10 cents / page.  To learn more about HuskyBucks, stop by the Circulation Desk, or visit http://www.onecard.uconn.edu/.

Library Computer Labs and Internet Access

Wireless access to the internet and law school network is available in all areas of the library.

There are two computer labs for your use on the second floor of the library.  Printing on laser printers (10 cents / page) is billed to your law school account, but free printing from Lexis and Westlaw is also available.

Study Rooms

There are 15 study rooms within the library. Groups of two or more can reserve a room for up to four hours per day. Study rooms can be reserved online or at the Circulation Desk.

Reserve Collection

The Reserve Collection, located behind the Circulation Desk, includes: items placed on course reserve by professors, past course evaluations, hornbooks, nutshells, current editions of Examples and Explanations and Emanuel Outlines Series, selected Connecticut materials, headphones, audiocassette players, remote controls for the library’s audio visual equipment and network cables.  Professor’s past exams are also available on reserve and online via the library’s webpage.  Reserve materials may be checked out for three hours and overnight.

Reserved Open Carrels

The library provides individually assigned carrels to all students for research and quiet study.  Carrels are assigned for the duration of one academic year and are located on the first, fourth and fifth floors of the library.  Carrel reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis and will start at the beginning of the school year.  Please watch your email for details.

Library Catalog Self-Service Features

You can view your circulation account and renew books online through the library catalog.  From our catalog page, click on “View / Renew Your Items,” then enter your name and law library barcode number.

If, while searching in the catalog, you locate a book that is currently checked out to someone else, click “Request” from the top of the screen.  After entering your name and ID number, the system will recall the book on your behalf.  We will notify you when the book is available for pickup at the Circulation Desk.

Interlibrary Loan

You can request materials that the library doesn’t own by filling out the online Interlibrary Loan form available on the library’s website.  Materials are generally received within two weeks.  Loan periods for books are usually four weeks, and photocopied articles need not be returned. You will receive a notice by email when the item is available for pickup at the Circulation Desk.
